I started my business after graduating from university- I had been having the best time studying fine art and I couldn’t find a job that would allow me to be creative and paint for a living. My artistic practice during my degree was small scale and paper based, and I have always loved and collected stationery, so stationery seemed like a good fit! I moved back in with my parents who kindly allowed me to live rent free, and took things from there. It was a huge learning curve- I didn’t know anything about running a business, wholesale, or manufacturing stationery. But I learnt a lot as I went along, made lots of mistakes, and was given lots of kind advice from fellow stationers and stockists.
Brighton and Hove has always been a really special city to me. I grew up nearby, in Worthing, and always wished I lived or studied in Brighton! I ended up doing an art foundation course at City College (now Brighton MET) and loved being able to wander the north lanes in my lunch breaks- I would buy stationery from Pen to Paper (this is back in 2012!) and search Snoopers Paradise for interesting objects I could use in my artistic practice. Now I am really lucky to live and work in Hove- Hove is a wonderful place but it’s wonderful because it is so close to Brighton. I’m constantly inspired by unusual objects I find in the many antique and bric-a-brac stores around Brighton, and also by my artistic friends who also live here and run creative businesses.
Since moving to Hove my business has grown a lot. I used to work from a second bedroom in my home, and then quickly my whole flat was consumed by boxes of greetings cards, with my friends and colleagues coming in to work and pack cards with me! I put any extra money in my business aside into a ’studio’ pot and in November 2024 the perfect space came up, and I was able to move my business into its new Hove home. It’s given me my flat back and it’s also allowed my business to continue growing. The space is on a mews road full of other creative people- there are painters who live here, fine art university tutors and even a printers!
Along the way I’ve done quite a few trade shows, and this is where I first met Hannah from Pen to Paper. Trade shows can be quite daunting and it was so nice to meet someone from my home city, and especially from a shop that I love and have been visiting since my college days. It is very special to be able to walk by and see my cards on a shelf among beautiful designs by other makers. I've been really lucky to work with many exciting shops and galleries so far,
